TERMINOLOGY
Carving- Removal of
shell material without penetrating through the shell of the gourd
Creativity- Fresh
approach, unusual use of materials, colors, etc.
Conformance- How well
exhibitor abides by the schedule rules
Cutting- Removal of
material by penetrating through the shell of the gourd
Dried- Mature gourd
that has been cured or hardened
Dye(stain)- Use of leather
dye, fabric dye, or natural stains(berries etc.)
Green- Gourd grown
in 2003 not yet completely dry
Luminary- use of a lighting
method such as electric light bulb, candle, etc..
Originality- Uniqueness,
new concept
Painted- The use of
paints (acrylics, oils, watercolor), colored pencils, markers, inks
Sculpture- Use of
gourds and pieces of gourds to produce a form (abstract or realistic)
Weaving- Use of material
to weave a pattern or design on the rim or surface of the gourd
Wood burning- Etching
of the surface of the gourd surface with heat without penetrating through
the shell
ILLINOIS GOURD SHOW RULES
FOR COMPETITION EXHIBITORS
1. Dry and Green gourds
must predominate in all classes.
2. No gourd may have been
previously exhibited in a past IL. Gourd Show.
3. Please try to have entry
forms mailed or email by September 3, 2003, so that proper staging can
be allotted for each class. Check all class numbers to be entered
on the entry form and mail the entry form to: Pam Riddle, R.R.1 Box 211,
Neoga, IL 62447 or email to gourdiddle@rr1.net .
4. All entries must be in
place, with entry tag attached, by 10:30 a.m., Saturday September 10, 2003.
Your name and entry number must be on the tag. Absolutely NO entries
may be mailed.
5. Entries must remain
in place until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Business cards may be placed
beside the exhibitor's pieces after judging has been completed.
6. Entries are open
to any Gourd Society member, not limited to Illinois.
7. Only one entry per class
by each entrant.
8. Judging of entries will
be Saturday, September 10, 2005, starting at 12:00 noon. Exhibitors are
not to attempt to influence or interfere with judges while judging is in
progress.
9. All classes will
be judged :1st, 2nd, 3rd. ribbons will be awarded in each class.
10. A "Peoples Choice
Award" will be given: voting will take place before classes are judged
and not revealed until after all ribbons have been awarded.
11. A "Special Show
Award" will be given and a ribbon will be awarded.
12. The Illinois Gourd Society
and the Chicago Botanical Garden shall not be responsible for any accidents,
losses, breakage of entries, containers, or exhibits.
13. It is the feeling of
the Illinois gourd society that the natural qualities of the gourds and
the use of natural materials should be emphasized, therefore no artificial
flowers, foliage, fruit, or any plastic items are permitted. Points
will be deducted for use of any such materials.
